OPTIMIZING YOUR LOUVRE EXPERIENCE: BEST TIMES TO VISIT AND SEE THE MONA LISA

Visiting the Louvre in Paris and experiencing the renowned Mona Lisa can be a highlight of any trip to France. To make the most of your visit, here are insights from our visit last summer and first hand tips focused on the best time of day to explore the Louvre and see the iconic painting.

The Louvre: Ticketing and Scheduling

Purchase Louvre tickets online in advance, preferably for off-peak hours. I recommend that you aim for the first time slot, to avoid escalating crowds throughout the day.

How Much Time Do You Need For The Louvre

Plan to allocate at least three hours for a meaningful Louvre experience. You could honestly spend multiple days there, but that is the bare minimum that I would recommend if you only want to hit the highlights. Make sure to download the Louvre museum map in advance to optimize your route and avoid backtracking.

The Louvre Size and Layout

The Louvre Museum is massive, with 35,000 works spread across 72,735 square meters. Study the layout beforehand and create a prioritized list of artworks to see. Wear comfortable shoes and pack water for an optimal visit.

Mona Lisa Viewing Strategy

The Mona Lisa draws large crowds, so have a game plan. If you purchase those morning tickets and head there as soon as you enter the museums, minimize wait times and enjoy a less congested experience.

Even then, be prepared for a line that may take 10-30 minutes to navigate. I also want to point out that the Mona Lisa is smaller than expected and is protected behind a casing. So, you won't be able to get as close as you may expect.

Alternatives to the Louvre

Consider other art museums and galleries in Paris if the Louvre's size is overwhelming. The Musée d’Orsay, near the Louvre, offers an extensive collection of Impressionist and post-Impressionist masterpieces. The smaller crowds and a more manageable size make this museum an attractive alternative, and it's located nearby.

Or, if you feel that you'd appreciate the Louvre more on a guided tour, there are a variety of tour guide-led tours.

There are actually many other art museums and galleries to visit in Paris.

Should You Visit The Louvre

Deciding whether The Louvre is worth a spot on your Paris trip itinerary depends on your preferences and priorities. The iconic experience, impressive art collection, and baroque architecture may make it a must-visit for some. However, if time constraints or large crowds are concerns, exploring alternative museums could offer a more relaxed and focused art appreciation experience in Paris.

In the end, choosing to visit the Louvre is a personal decision, and there's no need to feel guilty about opting for alternatives that provide more freedom and flexibility during your Paris trip. You may rather spend your time visiting The Eiffel Tower or the Arc de Triumph.
