5 TIPS TO REDUCE FOOD WASTE ON HOLIDAY — AND SAVE MONEY

Back at home, you probably diligently use up your leftovers for your office lunch, ask for a ‘to go’ box at restaurants, and maybe even have a compost bin.

But when you’re away on holiday, food waste concerns tend to slip way down the priority list.

It can be hard to be as sustainable as you’d like when you’re on the move without easy access to the likes of a fridge or microwave.

But, there are ways to still eat your way around a new place, without having such a negative impact on the environment.

From sharing food, to clever storing tricks, you can still be eco-conscious.

Plus, it’ll help you stick to your holiday budget too.

5 tips for reducing food waste when abroad

Surplus food app, Too Good To Go, have offered up their tips for being a little more sustainable when travelling.

Share meals

When dining out, try to share small plates or meals with friends – either the ones you’re travelling with or if you should make new ones – as this will mean there’s less likelihood of one person over-ordering and needing to take food home (or it ending up in the bin).

Utilise your amenities

If you’re staying at a friend’s house or an Airbnb which might have an equipped kitchen, try to be smart when bringing food back to life.

For example, stale crisps? Put them in the oven for a few minutes to bring back the crunch. Too much veg peel? Add a bit of oil, some spices and place them in the oven to make crisps. Overripe fruit? Add to ice cubes for easy infused water. Sad veggies? Submerge them in an ice water bath to revive them.

Store things correctly

If you don’t have a fridge, try to store things correctly. Wash your berries, dry them and place them in a sealed container with a piece of kitchen towel. Anything that is cut up, wrap and seal it in order to preserve freshness.

You can till use leftovers

Take your leftovers to the next level. It’s a common misconception that leftovers means eating the exact same meal the next day – hardly something you want to be doing when exploring a new food scene.

However, you can be adventurous. Save the surplus bread from the restaurant and turn it into croutons for tomorrow’s salad – or take your veggies as on-the-go snacks for when you’re walking around the next day.

Grab a surprise bag

Save food from going to waste by checking the Too Good To Go app. Rescuing one ‘surprise bag’ means you avoid the same amount of CO2 emissions used to make 10 cups of hot coffee. Plus, they can save you a fortune on holiday. Surprise Bags are sold at a staggering 25-50% of their contents’ original retail value.

The app has also recently launched their City Guide series, which offers local food recommendations in 18 countries, which they say will help people to ‘discover the heart and soul of a city through its food scene, all while making a positive impact on the environment and on their travel budget’.
